Iyengar Yoga Teachers are required to complete a minimum of six years of rigorous training and pass three standardized tests, before they receive certification and begin to teach. Certification in the Iyengar system is merit based and overseen by the non-profit Iyengar Yoga National Association of the United States.

Kim Peralta began as a student of the late senior Iyengar teacher Mary Dunn and trained on a regular basis under B.K.S. Iyengar in Pune, India for 25 years. She was a co-founder of the Iyengar Yoga Institute of New York, and director of the Iyengar Yoga School of Northern New Jersey for 12 years before moving to Brooksville and establishing the Iyengar Yoga Center of Maine.
